The Egyptian Labor Law No. 12 of 2003 governs employment relationships in Egypt, from hiring and working hours to termination and end-of-service entitlements. It applies to everyone working in Egypt, including foreigners, complemented by the terms of the individual employment contract and any special arrangements. This law grants foreign employees rights such as limits on working hours, paid leave and protection against arbitrary dismissal.
A foreign employee in Egypt generally works under a permit linked to their sponsoring employer. Losing or leaving a job without handling this correctly can jeopardize your legal status. If you face termination while holding a work permit, act quickly: we assess your options, including settlement, compensation, and the steps needed to protect your residency. For the formalities around permits, see our work permit guide.
Unpaid salaries, disputed overtime and end-of-service benefits are among the most common claims we handle. The grounds of the claim, the contract and the records of payment all matter. We build a full picture of what you are owed and pursue it before the competent labor authorities and courts.
Non-compete and confidentiality clauses are common in foreign employment contracts. They must be reasonable in scope and period to be enforceable. Whether you are bound by one or seek to enforce one, we advise on enforceability and the practical consequences before you sign or litigate.
Most labor disputes begin with the relevant labor authority before reaching the labor courts. Settlement is often faster and less costly; where it fails, we represent you through the court stages. Labor matters under Egyptian law are generally subject to reduced or no court fees, making legal action accessible. We advise honestly on whether to settle or litigate in your specific case.
If you live abroad and have a dispute with an employer in Egypt, you can authorize us through a notarized power of attorney. We handle the procedure, keep you informed in English or Arabic, and aim to resolve the matter without requiring your physical presence.
